Method
-
Step 1: Combine
Put the oats, milk, water and salt in a small non-stick saucepan.
-
Step 2: Cook
Bring to the boil over a medium heat, then lower the heat and simmer for 4–5 minutes, stirring often, until thick and creamy. Add a splash more liquid if it gets too thick.
-
Step 3: Serve
Rest for a minute, then spoon into bowls and add your toppings.
Tips
- Using half milk and half water keeps porridge creamy but not heavy.
- For overnight oats, mix 40g oats with 120ml milk and some yoghurt per person and chill overnight.
Storing & reheating
Best eaten freshly made. Leftovers keep in the fridge for 1–2 days; reheat with a splash of milk until steaming hot.
Variations
- Vegan: use a plant milk and maple syrup.
- Microwave: mix 40g oats with 250ml milk in a large bowl and cook for 2 minutes, stir, then cook for 1–2 minutes more.
- Stir in grated apple and cinnamon as it cooks.

Questions people ask
Are oats gluten-free?
Oats are often contaminated with wheat during processing, so only certified gluten-free oats are suitable for coeliacs.
Rolled oats or jumbo oats?
Rolled porridge oats cook fastest and creamiest; jumbo oats take a few minutes longer and are chewier.
