Recipe: Chocolate Easter nests

Ingredients

  • 200g milk chocolate, broken up
  • 25g unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp golden syrup
  • 75g cornflakes, or 3 shredded wheat biscuits, crumbled
  • 36 mini chocolate eggs, about 3 per nest

Method

  1. Step 1: Melt

Put the chocolate, butter and golden syrup in a heatproof bowl over a pan of barely simmering water (or microwave in short bursts, stirring between each) and stir until smooth.

  2. Step 2: Coat

Take off the heat and gently stir in the cornflakes until they're all coated.

  3. Step 3: Shape

Spoon into 12 paper cases in a bun tin and make a dip in the centre of each with the back of a teaspoon.

  4. Step 4: Fill and set

Press 3 mini eggs into each nest and chill for about 1 hour until set.

Tips

  • An adult should handle the hot water and melting; children can do the stirring, spooning and egg placing.
  • Butter and golden syrup keep the chocolate softer, so the nests are easier to bite.

Storing & reheating

Keep in an airtight container in a cool place (or the fridge in warm weather) for up to 5 days.

Freezing

Not necessary – they keep well.

Variations

  • White chocolate nests with sugar-coated eggs.
  • Rice Krispies instead of cornflakes for smaller, crunchier nests.

Questions people ask

Are these gluten-free?

Not usually – most cornflakes and shredded wheat contain barley malt or wheat. Use cereals labelled gluten-free and check the chocolate.

Can I make them without butter and syrup?

Yes, just chocolate works but the nests set harder and more brittle.
